Day 29
“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” — Hebrews 1:1-3
As Jesus Christ is the Truth, what is He the truth about? First and foremost, He is the truth about God. If we want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. Everything that Jesus is, God is. He’s the exact representation of God, and that is why we don’t come to truly know God by simply learning facts about Him, but through our personal experience of Him.
We know that God is omnipotent (all-powerful), omnipresent (all places at all times), omniscient (knows everything there is to know), immutable (never changes) and eternal (has no beginning, no end), but these are propositional truths. Though they’ll make us respect Him, they won’t make us love Him. It’s only in coming to know Christ that we love Him.
In John 14:8, Philip said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father?’” (John 14:9) When Jesus was confronted by the Pharisees, demanding to know, “Where is your father?” He replied, “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” (John 8:19).
We can sign our name to a creed of faith with good conscience. We can read the Bible, attend church, participate in ministries and give to charities but that isn’t what makes a Christian. Like Paul says in 2 Timothy 1:12, it is knowing in whom we believe. The more we know Jesus, the more we know God, and the more we trust and love Jesus, the more we trust and love God. They are inseparable as is the Holy Spirit who draws us to Christ and works in us to restore God into human experience. We cannot have one without the other. Jesus Christ is the absolute truth about God, and to know Him is to know God.
Prayer: Dear Lord, how grateful and humbled I am that you came to earth, not only to show us the glory of God, but to die for us and be raised again to live your resurrected life in me. I pray that as I grow in my Christian life, the glory of God, His character, becomes more and more manifested in me. In your Holy name, I pray. thank you, Lord.
To reflect upon: In what ways have I come to know Jesus better? How would I best describe my relationship with Him?
