Day 30

Charles Price

If we acknowledge Him, He will direct our paths. And that means we will walk by faith and not by sight as the big picture isn’t always obvious to us – not in this life anyway!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths.” — PROVERBS 3:5-6

Some of us are probably so familiar with this verse that it can flow out of our mouths with our minds on auto-pilot. But we may not really grasp the full importance of these words. These words give us tremendous confidence that our paths in life are not random, but directed by God who knows the end from the beginning, and relentlessly works out His purpose.

It is true that God has a purpose for mankind generally, but within that plan, He also has a specific plan and purpose for each of us personally.

When we become Christians, certain things become ours. Not only are we cleansed from our past sin and guilt, not only do we receive the gift of eternal life, not only do we have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to enable us to live the way God wants us to live, but God has now undertaken to guide our paths.

Of course, we can resist Him. As Stephen said to the Sanhedrin Council in Jerusalem, “You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!” (Acts 7:51-52) We can reject Him, disobey Him, and turn our backs on Him. But wouldn’t it make much more sense to simply submit to Him, knowing that He knows more than we ever will about ourselves, our lives and everything that lies ahead?

If we acknowledge Him, He will direct our paths. And that means we will walk by faith and not by sight as the big picture isn’t always obvious to us – not in this life anyway! But we know God knows from beginning to end, and that, in itself, is all we need to know!
