“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — JOHN 14:6
Jesus Christ is not simply the teacher of truth, but He is the embodiment of truth. Everything that derives from the truth, He preaches, and the truth His word reveals is embodied in Him.
To illustrate, if I were to take a train from Toronto to Montreal, and my schedule says my train is departing at 2 p.m. and arriving in Montreal at 7 p.m., the schedule is what I would go by, but it actually isn’t the truth. It bears witness to the truth, which is the train that will take me to my destination. I could have done all the right things: booked my seat, picked up my ticket, paid for it, and arrived at the platform on time. But what if the train comes, the doors open and I keep standing on the platform while the doors close and the train whizzes by me? I’m left standing there after doing all the right things except what was essential. I didn’t board the train.
Just as the schedule bears witness to the truth, which is the train, the Bible, from beginning to end, bears witness to Jesus Christ who is the Truth. It is His Holy Spirit who imparts new life from the moment we receive Him, and it is through Him alone we are given the way to be reconciled to God. We may do all the right things: attend church regularly, read our Bibles, volunteer our time and donate to charities, but if we’re not living in an active, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, we’re not boarding the train. We’re standing on the platform, and as far as God is concerned, going nowhere.
So the question is: How do we live in an active, intimate relationship with Christ? Paul tells us in Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him...” An intimate relationship with Jesus Christ cannot exist without love. And we show Jesus our love by bringing Him into every aspect of our lives. We place Him at the helm of everything we do and every decision we make. This can’t be done without intimate prayer and communion with Him, which is the very pulse and heartbeat of our relationship with Him. Jesus is the Truth, and the Christian life is being in a committed relationship with Him.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, My relationship with You is my life. Thank You for the gift of your Holy Spirit and for being the Truth made available to me every minute of every day.
TO REFLECT UPON: Am I bringing Jesus into every aspect of my life?
