Verse For Today
“Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.” —PSALM 51:6
Devotional
The measure to which we tell the truth is probably the most important thing about us. It is one of the steel pillars on which our lives are going to be held together and structured.
Jesus’ teachings always go under the surface of outward behaviour to the truth and integrity of character. If our hearts remain untouched and unruled by the Holy Spirit, our behaviour will remain untouched and undirected, but when truth is fundamental to our lives, our behaviour reveals the very foundation of the character of God.
Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). This is much more than God being true. This is God being “Truth”. It is His nature… unchangeable and eternal. He said to Ezekiel, “I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws” (Ezekiel 36:27). When we are brought into relationship with God, it is by His indwelling Spirit that He makes us like Himself, and one of the evidences and out workings is going to be that we are not only truthful, but we are true; that is truth in the heart; not just on the surface, but truth from the inner core of our beings.
The person who speaks what is true does so because he or she is true. If we allow ourselves not to be true, we are allowing the poison of the native language of Satan to influence and make us. We can be sure that as the fruit connects to the root, if the root is good, the fruit is good, but if we inject poison into the fruit, it’ll work its way back to the root and will corrupt it.
Truth is about character. We don’t put on character; we are our characters. We may put on different behaviours at times, but character is what we are. It is truth in our innermost being that pleases God. David asks, “LORD, Who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?” In the next verse, he answers, “He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart...” (Psalm 15:1-2). David speaks truth from his heart, not because it serves his interests, but because it is true, and truth has become his native language. It comes out of his heart.

Prayer
Dear Lord, I want to be true in heart in all my relationships and in everything I do. Grant me your strength of character every day of my life. Thank You, Lord.
Reflection
In searching my heart, does truth prevail in my life?
